When people think of Oxford, Mississippi, they often think of William Faulkner, the influential writer of Southern literature. Today, however, Oxford’s character hinges on a much larger literary community that draws literary veterans and aspiring writers alike.
Square Books, Oxford’s iconic bookstore, has served as the cornerstone – and a corner store – of Oxford’s literary community. Hosting over 150 authors a year, Square Books is a magnet for both customers and writers. It is also home to Thacker Mountain Radio, a live radio show that features authors and musicians.
Additionally, the University of Mississippi’s creative writing program continues to cultivate talent through its classes, as well as its conferences, that draw visitors from across the country.
For book lovers and writers alike, Oxford’s story is only getting better, and the city continues to benefit from its connection to – and support of – literary pursuits.
